What We Do

Our Vision

We envision a community in which:

  • No pet is surrendered, abandoned, or left untreated due to a lack of access to critical resources.
  • Every guardian and caregiver is equipped with the knowledge, behavioral strategies, and social supports necessary to provide lifelong, nurturing homes.
  • Safe, pet-inclusive housing is a community norm, with crisis support networks that keep families (human and animal) together through hardship.
  • Collaborative partnerships between agencies, nonprofits, and neighbors create a web of safety that protects both people and pets from harm and produces coordinated prevention and response pathways.
  • Affordable, accessible veterinary care and preventive services are available to all, reducing unnecessary suffering and overpopulation.
  • Community compassion becomes culture — where kindness, respect, and empathy toward animals and their humans reflect the heart of a thriving Taos County.

Why Us?

Woman Outdoors with Dog

SAFE Pet Partners is unique in offering a prevention-first, multi-service model that operates at the intersection of human social services, behavioral health, housing stability, and animal welfare.

Together, we are shaping a community shift: a future where Safety, Advocacy, Facilitation, and Empowerment are not just our name, but a living promise.

A safe home, a strong bond, and a thriving life for every pet and person we serve.

Our Solution:
Helping Pets by Helping People

In our local communities, pets and people often struggle together. When a pet suffers neglect, illness, or abandonment, there’s almost always a person behind that story facing hardship, crisis, or loss. Traditional animal welfare efforts often focus on one or the other—the animal or the human—but not both.

That’s where SAFE Pet Partners steps in.

SAFE Pet Partners addresses the crisis through comprehensive, compassionate, and collaborative action. By intervening early and supporting pet guardians, we prevent animal suffering before it happens.

Right Now…

Here are the initiatives that we are currently focused on:

Monthly Community Behavior Meetups (Free to the Public)

Once a month, hour-long meetups that allow the community to meet with a Certified Trainer and Behavior Counselor and ask advice and training tips for their dogs at home or in their care. These events are open to all, adults, children, volunteers, fosters, rescue/shelter employees, etc.

  • Dog-focused behavior meet-ups to inform and develop force-free training foundations
  • Take-Home Training Kits: Treat bags paired with brief behavior-reinforcement messages to encourage guardians to reward positive behaviors at home.
  • Light snacks and refreshments are available.
  • Educational Handouts featuring core training philosophies and general animal care information.
  • Attendees are encouraged to sign up if they’re interested in volunteering, fostering, or supporting the organization
  • List of local and regional behavior, rescue, and training resources

Dog Park Partnership with the Local Land Trust

We are collaborating with the Taos Land Trust to establish a dedicated dog park space. This partnership will:

  • Provide a safe environment for adult dog, off-leash socialization and play.
  • Serve as a hub for community events and training demonstrations.
  • Work as an opportunity to bring together local dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts.

Foster Network Expansion

We are working to develop a reliable foster network. This initiative includes:

  • Collaboration with local rescues and shelters to match fosters to animals in need.
  • Recruitment and training of new foster homes.
  • Ongoing support resources to ensure positive outcomes for both animals and foster families.
  • Community outreach and volunteer development integrated with the monthly meetups.
